How a Wellness Coach Changes Your Mind
May 08, 2017 - 01:22 PM
By Margaret MooreThe spring season reminds us of Mother Nature's drive to thrive. However, most humans are not thriving. Research on well-being concludes that about 20% of adults have a strong sense of purpose and are fully satisfied with their lives; less than 10% strongly believe their lives are ideal. Instead most people are stressed out and burned out. All of this stress harms biological function and increases susceptibility to chronic diseases. To make matters worse, most people feel too depleted, mentally and physically, to create a healthy way of life that would make them feel better. Less than 5% of adults engage in the health behaviors that prevent diabetes, heart disease and......
A Link Between Music and Medicine
April 30, 2017 - 08:00 AM
“Don’t try this at home,” Claudius Conrad, M.D., Ph.D., quips as he lectures on the historical ties between music and medicine. Conrad, an assistant professor of Surgical Oncology, explains to his audience that in the Middle Ages, popular prescriptions involved specific musical combinations. The example he offers involves alternating between playing the flute and harp to alleviate gout. Despite the long-standing connection between music and medicine, there’s only a small body of scientific research that addresses how music impacts the body. This subject is of particular interest to Conrad, a practicing laparoscopic liver and pancreas surgeon with doctoral degrees in......

April 23, 2017 - 08:00 AM
From our friends at Success Magazine: Meditation is like sitting by the bank of a river, watching it flow by. From time to time, we get pulled into the (thought) stream, but that’s OK. In fact, pulling ourselves out to again sit and watch is the heart of the practice. Read more here....

How Yoga Turns Your Bad Thoughts into Good Thoughts
April 02, 2017 - 09:56 AM
You learned in grade school science class that energy can appear in either the potential or kinetic form. The electricity in the wiring of your home is available for any use you choose. When you turn a light switch to the “on” position, energy appears in the form of light. This is the kinetic state because the energy is being used or expended. However, when you turn the light switch to the “off” position, the energy remains in the potential state – ready to be used at the flick of a switch. Meditation and Music May Reverse Early Memory Loss in Adults
March 09, 2017 - 08:10 PM
A recent study of adults with early memory loss found that practicing a simple meditation or partaking in a music listening program may have multiple benefits for older adults with pre-clinical memory loss. In this randomized controlled trial performed by a West Virginia University research team lead by Dr. Kim Innes, 60 older adults with subjective cognitive decline (SCD), a condition that may represent a preclinical stage of Alzheimer’s disease, were assigned to either a beginner meditation (Kirtan Kriya) or music listening program and asked to practice it for 12 minutes a day for 12 weeks.
