3 Intriguing Connections Between Music and Sleep
February 13, 2020 - 03:56 PM
The latest insights into how music affects you at bedtime and during sleep. Babies aren’t the only ones who love lullabies. Many people of all ages use music to improve their sleep. And sleep researchers are finding growing evidence to support this approach. Studies show that listening to or relaxing with music may be helpful even for those with short-term or long-lasting sleep disorders. For example, a recent analysis of published studies found that music offers clear benefits for primary insomnia—difficulty falling or staying asleep that isn’t due to medical problems, medications, or other substances. Yet much remains to be learned about exactly how......
The Overlooked Medicinal Impact of Music and Diet
November 06, 2019 - 09:12 PM
By: Richard K. Yu Music, diet, sleep, and stress all have a messy, but interconnected tangle of relationships with each other. Let’s demystify some of these connections. It’s two in the morning and you wake up groggily to the sounds of your stomach and the low hum of your refrigerator as you look for something to sate your appetite. Have you ever wondered in moments like these if they’re something wrong with this picture, even though it almost symbolizes the mundane aspects of life? The little things in life like music and a regular diet may play a bigger role in your overall health and wellness than you think. The Relationship Between Music and Stress......
Can Music Help You Calm Down and Sleep Better?
October 15, 2019 - 08:59 PM
Having trouble sleeping can have wide-ranging, negative effects on your health, so it's something that you should take seriously. For instance, it makes you less safe behind the wheel and increases your long-term risk of medical conditions such as obesity and heart disease. Though medical sleep aids may work quickly to help you drift off, they can have side effects and aren't good to use in the long term. Luckily, there is another treatment for sleepless nights that's cheap, isn't habit-forming, and has absolutely no negative side effects: music. Music is more than something that's simply enjoyable to listen to. It has a direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system,......
90-year-old Completes Master's Degree On Music and Dementia
September 22, 2019 - 04:50 PM
Matthew Lorenzon Dementia affects more than 400,000 people in Australia. Inspired by the powerful effects of music in nursing homes, Lorna Prendergast undertook a Master of Ageing degree at the University of Melbourne. She graduated in July at the age of 90. Prendergast enrolled in the degree after watching an ABC science program about music and dementia. She completed the course online from the Victorian town of Bairnsdale, overcoming technological hurdles that would challenge many others. Music technology provides sound opportunities Prendergast studied the effects of music therapy in nursing homes, including the delivery of personalised playlists using music......
Keep Your Brain Young with Music
September 22, 2019 - 12:03 PM
If you want to firm up your body, head to the gym. If you want to exercise your brain, listen to music. “There are few things that stimulate the brain the way music does,” says one Johns Hopkins otolaryngologist. “If you want to keep your brain engaged throughout the aging process, listening to or playing music is a great tool. It provides a total brain workout.” Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory. The Brain-Music Connection Experts are trying to understand how our brains can hear and play music. A stereo system puts out vibrations......
Music as Therapy: The Uses and Benefits of Sound Healing
July 29, 2019 - 11:00 AM
What is sound healing therapy? Sound healing therapy uses aspects of music to improve your physical and emotional health and well-being. The person being treated partakes in the experience with a trained sound healing practitioner. Sound healing may involve: listening to music singing along to music moving to the beat of the music meditating playing an instrument There are different types of sound therapy, including vibrational sound therapy, which uses special sounds that produce vibrations thought to improve brain waves. Healing with sound is believed to date back to ancient Greece, when music was used in an attempt to cure mental disorders. Throughout history, music has......
The Healing Power of Music
July 22, 2019 - 08:05 AM
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”~Plato George Moran, 39, a music teacher in Long Valley, N.J had a cardiac valve repaired at Morristown Memorial Hospital requiring his heart to be stopped for 90 minutes, placing him on a heart-lung machine. While in the recovery room, he heard the sound of a woman playing a beautiful harp, quietly and slowly. The harpist’s gentle arpeggios, according to the researchers studying the effects of music in recovery, may have helped regulate Moran’s heart rate, breathing and blood pressure. Although, at the......
6 Ways Music Can Heal You
July 14, 2019 - 10:36 PM
By Louise Jensen I love music enough to incorporate sound healing into my practice, and I see the joy it brings people every day. But, here are some things you may not know about the power in music: 1) When we listen to music our brain releases dopmaine which is a feel good chemical essential for the healthy functioning of the central nervous system; it has effects on emotion, perception and movement. 2) Music is proven to physiologically affect heart rate, breathing and pulse rate resulting in physical chills of pleasure. A study was undertaken by Dr Mike Miller of Baltimore, who measured the effects of music on the cardiovascular system by measuring blood vessel size before,......

Ageing in harmony: why the third act of life should be musical
June 07, 2019 - 11:58 AM
It’s never too late to pick up a musical instrument. In fact there are many reasons why it’s a great idea, particularly in old age. We normally hear about reasons to increase music education for children, and for good cause. There are many cognitive and social benefits to playing an instrument that aid a child’s development. Consequently, as an older adult, there are long-term effects of having taken part in these musical activities, as it can limit cognitive decline. Even a small amount of training can have long lasting effects. But this doesn’t mean that those who have never played an instrument in childhood have missed the boat. The......
